Ferha Farooqui and Frank Creber (Curators of The Urban Contemporaries Group) are proud to announce a new exhibition curated with the Nunnery Gallery, in Bow. - 4th Oct to 22nd Dec 2024
The East London Group (ELG), were predominantly working-class artists who painted scenes of east London and beyond in the early 20th century. They initially studied at the Bethnal Green Working Men's Institute and then at the Bow and Bromley Evening Institute where they were tutored by John Cooper and mentored by Walter Sickert, who also employed Group member Elwin Hawthorne as his studio assistant from 1928-1931. Their works were shown at the Whitechapel, Tate and Bond Street galleries and, most notably, at Alex. Reid and Lefevre Galleries at 1a, King Street in Mayfair where they were under contract for five of their eight years at the gallery. Two members of the Group represented Great Britain in the 1936 Venice Biennale. Sadly, WW2 saw the death of John Cooper, due to ill health so, after the war, the members either went back to their working lives or lost interest in painting or, in Harold Steggles’ case, simply stopped altogether: thankfully, a few carried on. We are pleased to be working with Alan Waltham, Curator of a magnificent collection of paintings by the East London Group to curate an exhibition inviting selected contemporary painters to respond to the works of these artists, from almost 100 years ago. www.eastlondongroup.co.uk
The resulting artist-led show will take place at the Nunnery Gallery between 4th Oct to 22nd Dec 2024. Here’s a link to the exhibition.

Publication - Excitingly, there will be a book to accompany the show published by Batsfords Books. Batsford’s history dates back to 1843, and since then it has forged a strong reputation for niche publishing.
Symposium - Finally, there will be a Symposium to accompany the exhibition on Saturday 19 October,1-5pm, at the Nunnery Gallery. Featuring voices from leading contemporary painters and thinkers, this half-day symposium will dive into the works and lives of the East London Group and the longstanding legacies and impact of their work on a generation of artists today. Speakers will include Alan Waltham, Ben Johnson and Timothy Hyman RA, amongst others. Due to the size of the gallery, space is limited. Therefore, the Symposium is by ticket only and you can obtain a ticket via the event page which you can find here:
