Ferha Farooqui and Frank Creber (Curators of The Urban Contemporaries Group) are proud to announce a new exhibition curated with the Nunnery Gallery, in Bow. - 4th Oct to 22nd Dec 2024
|This exhibition is a unique opportunity to view 33 original paintings by the historic East London Group alongside 22 contemporary interpretations of the locations that preoccupied this Group who painted the streets and scenes of East London, in the 1920s/30s. The aim of this exhibition is to ‘open a window’ to an earlier time of British Art by bringing together the works of these painters from 100 years ago, to enable new audiences to examine their canvases next to contemporary artists working now in the urban landscape tradition.
The historic East London Group began with evening painting classes in Bethnal Green; made up of mostly working-class men and women, the group painted what surrounded them – the East End – capturing their city in a way never previously seen. Taught by painters John Cooper (1894-1943) and Walter Sickert (1860-1942), amongst others, the group became enormously successful despite the class prejudices of the time, exhibiting at Whitechapel Gallery and National Gallery, Millbank (now Tate Britain) and representing Britain in the Venice Biennale in 1936. Only in recent years has the Group gained the historical recognition it deserves, and this show presents work from artists including Elwin Hawthorne, Cecil Osborne, Grace Oscroft, Henry Silk and the Steggles brothers, including works never previously seen publicly! This artist-led exhibition juxtaposes the East London Group's historic paintings with works created by contemporary artists interested in reflecting upon the modern urban experience. We are pleased to be working with Alan Waltham, Curator of a magnificent collection of paintings by the East London Group who has brought together the historic paintings by The East London Group from his own collection and private and public collections from around the country. www.eastlondongroup.co.uk
The exhibition will bring together original paintings by members of the East London Group alongside responses by contemporary painters from our Urban Contemporaries Group and guest artists including: David Hepher, Ben Johnson, Doreen Fletcher, Timothy Hyman RA, Harriet Mena Hill, Philippa Beale and Tim Craven, amongst many others.
Curators Ferha Farooqui and Frank Creber are pleased to have also created new paintings for this show.
